PERFECT PERFORMANCE: OUTSIDE LANDS 2014.

IMG_8418.JPG

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about perfect person, Ilana. She shared with all of us her summer concert picks, one of them being Outside Lands. I went the first few years with my friends Andie and Liz and had a great time seeing Band of Horses, Bloc Party, Sigur Ros, Passion Pit, and more. I haven't been the past couple of years and have lost all required skills to survive a three day concert.

Since my monogramed sweater and ballet flats are helpful in situations like OSL when you need to sneak into the VIP bathroom, they're not the most practical, so I asked Ilana to give us her professional advice on fashion and music for those crazy enough to brave the three day festival. Enjoy! xo, Caroline

ps- my OSL must-see bands are Death Cab for Cutie, Haim, Jenny Lewis, Tegan & Sarah.

Even though I am a Bay Area native, I still have difficulty dressing appropriately for San Francisco summers. After my six year stint in San Diego, I came back to the Bay just in time for Outside Lands in 2012. I totally had forgotten that summer here isn't like summer in Southern California; mini sun dresses and kimonos don't fly in Golden Gate Park like they do at the Polo Field during Coachella. Karl the fog is relentless in August, and I had to fully change up my festival style.

This is my third year attending all three days at Outside Lands and I am starting to feel like a pro. I have always loved music and going to shows, but Outside Lands is one of my favorite festivals because it is on my home turf, and the line up is always eclectic and fantastic. While I primarily go for the music, fashion plays a large role in the fun.

At the festival, I think every outfit should be functional, while incorporating statement pieces and awesome shoes to spice it up. Layers are your best friend (I highly recommend this American Apparel circle scarf that can be used as a layer AND cocoon blanket), as the weather is constantly changing throughout the day/night at Golden Gate Park.

Here are my music pics and fashion tips on how to do Outside Lands like a pro this year:

Day 1: Faux Fur & Nike's

I own around 5 faux fur jackets and 3 faux fur vests (excessive... I know). They make every outfit effortlessly chic and fun. PLUS they give a ton of warmth. Pairing a vest or jacket with some colored or patterned pants would make a great first day Outside Lands outfit. Adding in some cool sneakers like these Nike's would be the perfect touch.

// Pro Tip: Never wear or even bring lip gloss. It's waayyyyy too windy. Instead, I recommend a bright lipstick because it won't stick. This is my all time favorite pink by MAC called "Girl about Town"  //

// Top bands to see: Phosphorescent, Holy Ghost!, Warpaint, Chromeo, Disclosure, Tegan and Sara, Kanye West //

Day 2: Maxi Dress & Vans

Since the weather is so temperamental in Golden Gate Park, I always opt to wear a maxi dress for one of the days. It's a great pick because you can wear it on its own if it is sunny, or layer over it with flannels and a jacket when the fog rolls in. You can also wear tights AND spandex under it for warmth. I recommend pairing a maxi dress with a small flower crown so you don't over power the outfit. Classic Vans are definitely optimal for dancing and trudging through the dirt in GGP.

// Pro Tip: Wear either a backpack or a big cross body purse. You won't regret filling it with a little blanket to sit on and various layers. I would also recommend bringing two factory sealed water bottles (that's all they will allow) and some snacks since the prices for water are ridiculous. //

// Top bands to see: The Kooks, Dum Dum Girls, Trails and Ways, Tycho, Atmosphere, HAIM, Capital Cities, Duck Sauce, Local Natives, Tom Petty //

Day 3: Poncho & Dr. Martens

The third day of Outside Lands is always the most difficult. Everyone is semi burnt out from the first two days, and from spending too much time at "wine lands". The last thing anyone wants to do is probably put effort into a fashionable outfit. For the last day, I would choose something easy to throw on, but that is also cute and cozy. A poncho is a great choice because its warm and easy to layer with. Pair it with a bright beanie so your friends can find you easily. To top off the outfit, I would suggest some Dr. Martens. They are comfortable, edgy, and  ideal for getting dirty.

// Pro Tip: Big accessories are hard to incorporate into outfits when you have so many layers going on. One of my favorite things to wear is a vintage bolo because its unique, but not bulky. I also always paint my nails a bright color (this is currently my favorite nail polish ) because its the perfect built in accessory!

// Top bands to see: CHVRCHES, Flume, Lykke Li, Gardens and Villa, Cut Copy, Gold Panda, The Killers, The Flaming Lips //

Hope to see everyone there! And remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint :)
