Happy Friday! I will be sharing my weekly pregnancy update on Monday (read my previous pregnancy posts here), but wanted to do a special post on maternity style! Yup, it's time to talk elastic waistbands and mumu tops and #styletheBUMP !!!
Looking at the photos above it's easy to see that one is not like the other! Yes, one of us looks pregnant and one of us does not! I'm still not really sporting a bump but that doesn't mean I can't take my style inspiration from Lucky Magazine Editor-in-Chief, preggars style inspiration goddess, new mom, Eva Chen! Replace your favorite catch phrase, "This one time, I saw Regina George wearing army pants and flip-flops, so I went out and bought flip-flops" with, "This one time, I saw Eva Chen wearing a beanie and Chloe boots, so I went out and bought a beanie and Chloe boots!" It rolls off of the tongue much easier and you won't lose your younger cousins that don't know Mean Girls. #youregettingolder
Half in jest, half in seriousness, looking to others for maternity fashion inspiration is super helpful. Unless it's editors and celebrities. I love Blake Lively and I know everyone loved her maternity style, but it's very unrealistic to try and dress like a celebrity- especially during pregnancy. They have a team working on their hair and make-up every time they step out of the door. Every item they wear is custom tailored to fit their daily changing body. I saw some site that calculated one of Blake's maternity look and it was over $2,000- yeah, not going to happen for the rest of us.
A lot of people have asked me what my maternity style is going to be. I hadn't thought too much about it until recently- mostly because we have some weddings coming up in the next few months and I've been looking at maternity dresses and felt like I had to stop because I can't even picture myself with a bump. It was a mind trip and I don't want to believe that I can't fit into my Kate Spade dresses.
But when I really reflect on my maternity style, I don't think it will change at all from my current style. That's the attitude that I think all preggo people should adopt. I'm not going to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. I'm going to invest in the things I wear now and actually have worn for the past couple of years: black pants, white blouses, structured long sweaters, colorful flats, pleather, Kate Spade jewelry, faux fur, oversized purses, and playful pieces. Somethings will have to change. I'm sad to say that high heels now just stay in my Neiman Marcus cart instead of making it through check-out. I'm also sad that my high heels will probably collect some dust over the next couple of months, but welcome to life as a mom!
Maternity wear is an interesting experiment in geometry, physics, and magic and I'm still trying to figure it out. In the meantime, I'm not going to go out and start wearing maxi dresses- I've never worn one or owned them- now is surely not the time. I'm not going to start wearing maternity jeans. I hate jeans!!!! I've never really worn tight tops but it will be interesting to see in the next couple of months if that's my decision or not because everything becomes tight. The one thing I've never worn before is patterned workout pants, like these Nike ones, and I can't wait to get a pair with my maternity thighs!!!!
I think the goal with maternity, and fashion in general, is to just do you. Yes, get inspired by others, but put your own twist on it. I hope that my attempt at navigating maternity wear is somewhat inspiring, if nothing more than a source of great laughs, I mean look at how stupid I look in a beanie!!! Eva just makes it look so easy!!
Check back with me when I'm 36 weeks and see if I'm even dressed! xo, Caroline
On a separate note, last night was the opening party at the Rebecca Minkoff store on Fillmore Street. It was fun to see a lot of my friends that I've met through the blog and to see Rebecca again. I was extremely flattered when Rebecca said she remembered meeting me. Don't worry, I asked her about Uri!! Read my previous post about #RMSF and my admiration for CEO and brother Uri Minkoff here!
PS- On a completely separate note, when I was driving home from the party I soon realized that one of my headlights was out. And when I say soon, I mean like almost half way home and this was only because EVERY single person on the road was flashing their high beams at me. It was like I was in the Disney Electrical Light Parade with all of the flashing lights!!!
HAPPY FRIDAY, PARTY PEOPLE!!!! Lots of Love!!
